Ingredients (Serves 4)
1) Beef – 1/2 kg, cubed
2) Coconut oil – 2 – 3 tbsp
3) Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Coconut tidbits / thenga kothu – 1/4 cup
4) Onion – 1 medium, thinly sliced
Ginger and garlic, crushed – 1.5 tbsp each
5) Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Kashmiri chilly powder – 1 tbsp
Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
Meat masala powder – 1 tbsp (I used Eastern meat masala powder)
Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
6) Hot water – 1/2 cup
7) Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
8) Coconut oil – 1 – 2 tbsp
Method
Heat 2 – 3 tbsp coconut oil in a kadai / uruli over medium-high heat. Add curry leaves and coconut tidbits. Stir for a minute. Add sliced onion, little salt, crushed ginger and garlic. Cook until onion turns golden. Bring down the heat to low. Add spice powders numbered 5. Mix well and cook until their raw smell leaves. Add beef pieces and mix well. Cook for a few minutes. Add 1/2 cup hot water. Mix well. Cover and cook for about 35 – 45 minutes, stirring in between, until the beef pieces are done. Open the lid and add 1/2 tsp garam masala powder. Cook for 10 – 15 minutes until beef is dry, dark and roasted well (you can transfer it to a non-stick pan to make this step easier) adding 1 – 2 tbsp coconut oil, if required. Serve with hot steamed rice.
